History
Long before gourmet coffee had become a household
requirement in America, Carl Rand, the original owner of the Durango
Coffee Company, and still the artisan roaster of our fine coffees,
had begun a quest to find the perfect cup of coffee. In 1984, Carl,
a professional chef (Culinary Institute of America) started roasting
his own beans … out of a shed behind his home. Pretty soon
he was supplying Durango’s best restaurants with fresh roasted
coffee. He bought a bigger roaster and moved his business downtown,
opening a small retail shop to sell his coffees in bulk to the
public, and continuing to wholesale to restaurants in Durango,
Telluride,
Santa Fe, and Albuquerque.
In 1990, Carl moved the Durango Coffee Company into the current
building at 730 Main Avenue. Originally, the back of the store
held a coffee roaster and customers
could see the whole finishing process. But business outgrew the space and Durango
Coffee Company coffees are now being roasted in a warehouse nearby in Durango.
Getting back to his roots in the culinary arts, Carl expanded the store to
include a gourmet kitchen shop. Durango Coffee Company succeeds
because of these two
interrelated businesses: a coffee bar/cafe and a gourmet kitchen store. Customers – both
new and repeat – are enticed in for the area’s freshest, locally
roasted coffees. Many naturally begin browsing the extensive, ever-changing
kitchenwares on display. We like to think of it as a special blend of coffee
and cookware.
In 2004 Carl sold the retail operations of the Durango Coffee
Company located at 730 Main Ave. in Durango, CO to the current
owner, Tim
Wheeler. Carl continues to operate the Durango Coffee Company’s
roasting and wholesale warehouse operations and is our exclusive
coffee roaster.
We are open daily from 7:30AM to 9:00PM and
always looking forward to serve you, please feel free to stop
in and taste the real flavor of Durango. |
